Media speculation from when the game was first announced was that Dragon Quest Builders would be a Dragon Quest version of Minecraft. Early screenshots show the player building a camp out of blocks; the camp gains levels based on how much it has been built up. Materials that are gatherable by the player include «rock, wood, fruit, plantlife, slime ooze, and more». Monsters such as Slime and Dragon in original Dragon Quest will appear in the game. The player has a health bar, and early screenshots show a food meter.
Dragon Quest Builders is a spin-off from the long-running fantasy JRPG franchise Dragon Quest. In a significant departure from the usual games in the franchise, the game world is composed of large square blocks, very reminiscent of Minecraft. The game takes place in Alfegard — the world of the original NES Dragon Warrior, now ravaged by the Dragonlord. With the land around them in ruin, the player is tasked with rebuilding and restoring it to its former splendor.
Generations ago, the realm of Alefgard was plunged into darkness by the terrible and treacherous Dragonlord, ruller of all monsters. Mankind was robbed of the power to build and forced to wander the ruins of their former home, scrounging and scavenging in the dust to survive.
Now it's up to you, a Legendary Builder chosen by the Goddess herself, to return the power of creation to the people and rebuild Alefgard. Only when the wonder of imagination has been returned will mankind be able to overthrow the evil Dragonlord once and for all!
